Internet access in the dormitories

Each network connection in the dormitories is assigned a fixed IP address and a fixed monthly quota of high-speed traffic. The contingent can be requested from your own connection at http://traffic.campus-company.eu . Only the data consumption (traffic) to the Internet is counted. Internal university traffic (except VPN connections) is not counted. If the high-speed quota is used up, your network connection will be throttled in bandwidth for the rest of the month. Further information on this bandwidth restriction can also be obtained from the URL above.

Only the IP address assigned to the apartment may be used. In case of misuse, the connection will inevitably be disconnected from the network. If you have used an incorrect IP address, you will have to wait until the next full hour for your connection to be reactivated. During the disconnection you will receive a message that no network cable is connected.

Instructions

Open the IP settings of your network card at your device: Start → Settings → Network and Internet
In the right column under Change Network Settings, select Change Adapter Options.
Right click on Ethernet → Properties
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) → Features
Then enter the data there according to the slip of paper you received from your landlord:
- IP address: 143.93.XX.XXX
- Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
- Gateway: 143.93.XX.1
- DNS server: 143.93.32.2
- 2. DNS server (alternative DNS server): 143.93.36.2
Save the settings and connect your device to the computer socket in your home (usually the left port) using a network cable.

Open the IP settings of your network card at your device: Start → System settings → Ethernet
Configure IPv4 → select manually.
Then enter the data there according to the slip of paper you received from your landlord:
- IP address: 143.93.XX.XXX
- Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
- Gateway: 143.93.XX.1
- DNS server: 143.93.32.2
- 2. DNS server (alternative DNS server): 143.93.36.2
Save the settings and connect your device to the computer socket in your home (usually the left port) using a network cable.

If you want to broadcast a WLAN network in your apartment, you will need a WLAN router.
IMPORTANT: WLAN repeater or WLAN access points unfortunately do not work here. A frequently used and inexpensive model is for example the TP-Link TL-WR841N.

Setting the IP address on a router:

NOTE: The configuration and menu structure varies greatly depending on the device. Therefore we cannot provide instructions for all devices.

Connect your PC either with a network cable or via WLAN to the router you want to use in the dormitory.
Open the configuration interface of the router in a web browser according to the instructions manual of the device (usually it can be reached at the following IP address: 192.168.0.1).
Log in there with the login information from the manual of the device.
Find and open the menu item Internet access or WAN access.
Change the IP settings there from dynamic to static.
Then enter the data according to the slip of paper you received from your operator:
- IP address: 143.93.XX.XXX
- Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
- Gateway: 143.93.XX.1
- DNS server: 143.93.32.2
- 2. DNS server (alternative DNS server): 143.93.36.2
Now connect the WAN socket of your device to the computer socket in your apartment (normally the left port) using a network cable.
On your end devices (smartphone/tablet/PC) you now only need to connect to the WLAN router. Further settings are not necessary.

Basically we recommend that you make the following settings on your router:

Change the name (SSID) of your WLAN network so that it cannot be traced back to the model used.
Change the password of your wireless network to a long password and use the WPA2 standard (not WPA).
Disable the WPS function, if available.
Leave the wireless channel settings on Automatic to minimize interference.
Change the password used to log on to your router (the password used to access the configuration page).
