In May 2015, the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park was ceremoniously opened and since then, a variety of cooperations have been established between the National Park and the Birkenfeld Environmental Campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences. With the signing of the official cooperation agreement on September 24, 2018, a formal framework was created to manifest and further promote this cooperation. An important building block for this will be the new National Park Authority building on the grounds of the Environmental Campus. The principles and concepts of sustainable construction will be pursued. The signing of the agreement, in the presence of the responsible ministries, underlines the special importance of the project.
Other common interests that are to be strengthened and further developed through this agreement include environmental monitoring and the development of sustainable regional concepts. The aim is to achieve close coordination and mutual support through data exchange, joint events, infrastructure sharing and joint projects. Examples include the National Park Academy, which regularly takes place on campus premises, the Summer School, which aims to provide international participants with insights into the basics of national park management and national park monitoring using information technology, and the ENMOSA - Energy Mosaic Hunsrück-Hochwald project.
